As the mass exodus from New York and California cause democrats to worry about their hold over the electoral college, the Red state of Texas is slated to gain at least two House seats if the Census Bureau's population estimates hold true.
According to The Dallas Morning News, this massive influx in people means the Lone Star State could possibly get 3 new House seats:
Texas is poised to add two House seats — and perhaps even three — to its already massive congressional delegation in the wake of the 2020 census, according to the latest population estimates released this week by the U.S. Census Bureau.
Those projections track longstanding expectations for fast-growing Texas, whose population now stands just shy of 29 million people.
If these numbers hold up, then Texas will be getting at least two seats and more likely three, which worry Democrats as California and New York are set to lose at least 3 collective seats. According to research done by Election Data Services, it makes more sense to state that Texas will gain 3 seats instead of two. They write:
The Bureau’s 2020 total population estimates show that 10 congressional districts are likely to shift between 17 states that will be impacted by changes in their congressional delegation if these new numbers were used for apportionment today. The states of Arizona, Colorado, Montana, North Carolina, and Oregon to each gain a single seat, while the state of Florida would gain a second seat and the state of Texas would gain a third seat with the new data. Single seat losses will occur in the state of Alabama (dependent upon data used), California, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, New York (possibly two seats), Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and West Virginia using the new data. Maps of both sets of the 2020 numbers are attached.
The Census Bureau data shows a shifting tide in American politics away from Democrat and Socialist policies and toward freedom policies. The states receiving the influx of population growth are historically known for their smaller government and freer economy. This is especially true for Texas, despite their somewhat unusually big-government approach to Coronavirus, they are still one of the freest states in the country.
