Editor's Note: Readers may have noticed the accidental line about New York losing a "Senate seat." We corrected the misprint to read with what the article states: that it was House seats, not Senate seats. Also, The Census Bureau has confirmed that New York is losing one House seat.
The preliminary data from the U.S. Census Bureau has confirmed an aching suspicion for many in the Right, New York City has been losing so many people that they will lose representation in Congress. Now, they have data to back this up.
New York has lost more than 120,000 people as of July 1, 2020, according to the Census Bureau. This number is twice as high as California and it leads the charge of all states who have lost people. However, it doesn't tell the full story.
According to William Frey of the Socialist Brookings Institution, an organization that has argued for "heavy" wealth redistribution, which economists say will completely destroy the economy, New York will lose one House seat if the numbers stay.
There's plenty of reason to assume the numbers are accurate, however. For one, FedEx itself has received more than 300,000 changes of address for people leaving New York City, with most being people who are leaving the state. Additionally, New York City has also hit record vacancies due to Coronavirus as people try to flee the state. New York City is responsible for 40% of New York's population.
But stopping with New York losing a single House seat doesn't take into account the full gravity of the data. According to Jeff Wice, a New York redistricting expert, the Empire State will lose 2 seats if they go with the July 1 estimates instead.
Additionally, the deep red state of Texas is set to gain between 2-3 house seats due to the massive influx of people who have moved in. According to the Census Bureau, more than 320,000 people have moved into the state, making it the state with the most move-ins.
