New Jersey Congressman Albio Sires is complaining about financial aid that international agencies are providing Nicaragua under what he says is “the pretext of poverty reduction, disaster relief and small business support.” He points to Nicaragua’s dictatorial regime headed by socialist Daniel Ortega as the reason for his complaints.
Sires is right to complain about foreign aid to Nicaragua, but why limit a critique of governmental aid to Nicaragua? Why not terminate all U.S. foreign aid to every international agency and every foreign regime, including regimes that do the bidding of U.S. officials? Wouldn’t the American people be better off keeping their tax monies for themselves rather than have it sent to foreign agencies and foreign regimes?
Sires expressed his sentiments in an op-ed yesterday in El Pais. In his article, he expressed support for U.S. sanctions against Nicaragua. As an American born in Cuba, he also is a big supporter of the U.S. embargo against Cuba, which, as I have long pointed out, is a direct attack on the freedom of travel, economic liberty, and private-property rights of the American people.
I’ve got a better idea. How about just having the U.S. government leave Nicaragua and Cuba alone? How about leaving Venezuela alone? How about lifting sanctions against Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, and every other country in the world? In fact, how about having the U.S. government leave the people of the world alone? Hasn’t it already wreaked enough death and destruction with its sanctions, invasions, occupations, partnerships with dictators, and state-sponsored assassinations?
It seems like just yesterday that U.S. officials were telling us that “national security” was being threatened by the communist regime in Nicaragua. Wasn’t that what Ronald Reagan’s deadly and destructive interventionist escapade with the Contras was all about — protecting us from the Russian Reds who were supposedly using Nicaragua as a way station on their way to invading and conquering the United States? Wasn’t that what the illegal, unconstitutional, and hypocritical Iran-Contra affair was all about?
Wasn’t that what the U.S. embargo against Cuba, the invasion of Cuba, and the repeated attempts to murder Fidel Castro were all about? Wasn’t Cuba considered a communist dagger pointed at America’s throat? I thought the Cold War ended in 1989. Why is the embargo against the Cuban people still going on? Are they afraid that Castro might come back from the dead and lead the Cuban army in a Red invasion of the United States?
As far as I know, the Nicaraguan army is still not close to reaching the United States. And I still have seen no evidence that the Cuban military has even attempted to invade Miami. Anti-immigrant types are saying that Venezuelan immigrants are “invading” the United States, but that’s not really the same as saying the Venezuelan Red army is invading our country. The same holds true for North Korea, Iran, and, well, for that matter, North Vietnam.
Let’s face it: The entire Cold War was just one great big racket, and it continues to be one great big racket. The Reds were never coming to get us, and they are still not coming to get us. They were just used as a corrupt way to enrich the permanent and ever-growing military-intelligence establishment and its army of “defense” contractors. And that’s what they’re still used for.
Our American ancestors had it right. The biggest threat to our freedom and well-being lies not with foreign groups or foreign regimes, including Russia, China, Cuba, Nicaragua, and the commies. The biggest threat to our freedom and well-being lies within our very own federal government, including its latest interventionist escapade in Ukraine that is pushing us ever-closer to nuclear war with Russia.
It’s time for the American people to put an end to the entire interventionist racket. Our lives and well-being depend on it.
