In an ESPN interview that aired on June 7, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona outlined the US Department of Education's (DOE) stance on transgender athletes, presumably under the direction of, or with the consent from, the Biden Administration. Despite a recent Gallup poll finding that 62 percent of Americans support continuing running sports competitions based on biological sex, Cardona has warned that if states do not follow the official federal narrative, his agency may take action.
However, the American Family Association (AFA) is partnering with parents and female athletes to challenge the DOE's new directive forcing transgenderism in student sports. AFA Executive Vice President Ed Vitagliano highlights the Secretary's statement's fundamental ignorance for the facts of science and public opinion, "Secretary Cardona’s comments clearly illustrate the stunning blindness of the transgender radicals." He then went on to say "What parents are demanding and states are doing through their legislatures is stating that boys are boys regardless of what they call themselves. In other words, actual gender is what matters."
The danger to states and, by extension, all sports organizations was evident, Cardona warned, "We do have a responsibility to protect the civil rights of students, and if we feel the civil rights are being violated, we will act." It's also worth mentioning that Cardona considers it a "civil right" for boys to participate against girls in athletic competitions reserved for women.
Cardona stressed that he supports “local control” in education but suggested that his office would be open to taking action against states that pass laws requiring athletes to compete on sports teams that correspond with their biological sex instead of their chosen gender identity. What action they might take and how enforceable it would be is undefined. To date, over 25 states have passed laws or taken other action that would ban biological males from competing in women’s athletics.
