“I want people to come and see the Grand River. I want people to come and experience the Grand River. And I want them to make that connection. Not only to see it, but to feel it, because they have such an affinity for that river, that the more people that can experience that river, the more likely it is to receive some type of protection.” – Tom Werkman, Werkman Outfitters

In Episode 185 of District of Conservation, Gabriella speaks with Tom Werkman—a Grand Rapids, MI-based fishing guide who owns and operates Werkman Outfitters. Here’s more about his charter business:

In 2016, Tom started Werkman Outfitters with two goals in mind:

The first goal was to weave a common thread through his and his son Max’s life. He believed that together they could push each other to become better fisherman, better guides and better business owners.

The second goal was to help people see that the Grand River is a viable fishing corridor and to bring to light the environmental challenges its has overcome and the challenges that remain.

Since then, they have guided hundreds of clients from all over the United States and well beyond. They pride themselves on building lasting relationships, curating memorable experiences and advocating for the environmental health of the Grand River and its tributaries.
