Congressional Democrats introduced a new bill calling for mandatory licenses for all firearms and raising the age of gun ownership to 21. Titled the Sabika Sheikh Firearm Licensing and Registration Act, the series of regulations would effectively ban gun ownership to anyone who is under 21 years old, regardless of what existing laws are in effect.
Additionally, the law would mandate for licenses for all firearms, regardless of the type. It even regulates more types of ammunition.
The text of the bill states:
Except as otherwise provided in this subsection, the Attorney General shall issue to an individual a license to possess a firearm and ammunition if the individual—
“(i) has attained 21 years of age;
Additionally it would mandate:
“(a) In General.—The Attorney General, through the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, shall establish a system for licensing the possession of firearms or ammunition in the United States, and for the registration with the Bureau of each firearm present in the United States.
The law also bans anyone from owning a firearm if they have "conduct that endangers self or others," without explaining what such conduct entails. This could potentially mean universally banning weapons ownership to someone who is a member of a political party if the government deems that political party to be a terrorist group, whether this is true or not.
Additionally, a simple fight in a bar, even if it is self defense, could be used for such justification, since the law provides no definition of what this clause means. This mandate would further infringe on a basic right as outlined in the Constitution. Democrats are decreeing they will dictate who will and will not own a gun. And they want to force this on you.
All it takes is the thinnest of evidence and an order from a psychologist and your firearm license will be denied. Nobody who is a danger should own a gun, but the fact of the matter is people have been attacked by their state government over these types of laws.
Red Flag laws resulted in the deaths of people as police broke in to confiscate their weapons. These Red Flag laws include similar mental health clauses to this mandate.
However, what everyone is ignoring in this debate is that gun ownership reduces violent crime. According to Just Facts, a public policy think tank known for its rigorous standards and extensive in-depth analyses, gun control laws actually accompanied increases in murder rates for Washington D.C., Britain, and Chicago.
Additionally, despite bans on automatic firearms, mass shootings have remained roughly the same.
So gun control does not ever fulfill its purpose. In fact, roughly 3 OUT OF 4 CRIMINALS do not buy a gun from a licensed vendor. 40% purchase the gun illegally and 37.4% purchase it from a friend or family member. These types of sales cannot be regulated because they happen in secret.
So the regulations proposed in this bill only target citizens and make it much more difficult for someone to purchase a gun for self defense. It takes the police roughly 10 minutes to respond, but mass shootings start in seconds. Self defense is more important now that ever before.
