Drug Trafficking

Like many other investigations the FBI undertakes, this case involved the assistance of multiple law enforcement partners, each contributing individual expertise, talent and resources. “But in particular,” said King, “we worked very closely and seamlessly with the Beckley-Raleigh County Drug and Violent Crime Unit, representing the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office, Beckley Police Department, and West Virginia State Police.”

At a press conference announcing the results of the 2017 takedown of Carter’s distribution organization, Beckley Police Chief Lonnie Christian thanked the FBI for its “tremendous” resources and personnel for the operation. He also said, “This is not only huge for law enforcement, but this is huge for the communities themselves.” Raleigh County Sheriff Scot Van Meter added, “In my 25 years of law enforcement, this is the most significant drug investigation and roundup I have ever been involved with.”

As for getting nearly two dozen drug criminals off the streets of West Virginia communities, King said, “These guys arrested were a major problem in that area for a long time and had gone untouched. It took the joint efforts of local, state, and federal law enforcement to uncover their criminal conspiracy and make an impact on the availability of dangerous drugs in Raleigh County.”
